Pompeii’s Ruins Brought to Life

POMPEII | When Mt Vesuvius erupted in 79AD it devastated the ancient city of Pompeii. But the ash also preserved many artifacts and structures, allowing us insight into the people that lived there and their way of life.

You can easily spend an entire day or two at Pompeii armed with a map and good walking shoes. The place is huge. Archaeologically speaking, the excavated ruins of Pompeii are 45 hectares, that's roughly 72 football fields. Another 20 hectares or so remains unexcavated.

Signa, Italy: Learning to Cook Tuscan Style on a One Day Course
SIGNA | Signa, a small picturesque village 15 minutes drive from Florence, is the setting for the Good Tastes of Tuscany cooking course we're about to undertake. While a 13th century mansion is the base, the actual cooking is done across the road in a converted farmhouse.

Apart from my sister and I, eight other people are here, ready to learn how to cook Tuscan style. Over the next four hours we'll be creating a Tuscan feast that includes handmade ravioli, risotto with asparagus and 'spezzatino', an aromatic beef stew.

As soon as I arrive through the airport gates I’m hit with a salty sea smell and relaxing balmy breeze. The locals seem to be friendly and smiley, although charging ridiculous amounts to get a five minute taxi to the hotel – I can’t help feel that the next three days are going to full of sun, fun and relaxing.

Positano is a Stairmaster Heaven

POSITANO | I go to Italy prepared. In case I eat too much pasta I've a daily aerobic workout, an hour of squats, lunges and thrusts, carefully photocopied from a magazine and tucked safely into the inside pocket of my suitcase. Fortunately, my suitcase stays in Naples in the left-luggage department when I go to Positano for a week's visit.

But there's no need to feel guilty. As soon as I step off the bus with my downsized luggage, a staircase officially named 'The Thousand Steps' greets me. I'm in stairmaster heaven. Or should that be hell?
