A brief history of my travel writing • Bella Italia combines my love of creative writing and a passion for Italy;its people, culture, history, landscape and food! • In 1996 I completed a Masters in English from The University of Auckland and moved to the UK for two years. • My first trip to Italy was in 1997. It involved lost luggage at Pisa airport and the next 24 hours holed up in a hotel ironically called La Pace (The Peace) with a stomach virus. I glimpsed the tantalising view of the leaning tower from my window but unfortunately spent most of my first day in Italy viewing the toilet bowl. Despite this inauspicious beginning, the following night in Florence I stumbled across the Duomo by accident and was instantly captivated. During the next week as I made my way through Venice, Verona and Rome, Italy worked its subtle magic on this unsuspecting travellor. I didn't want to leave, I was hooked. • After this trip I wrote a humourous travel tale 'Down and Out in Pisa' which was published in TNT Magazine in London. This was followed by two more publications, including 'Trya Speaka da Lingo in Roma'. I seemed to have hit on my vocation, finding the funny in disastrous situations. • Trying to 'speak da lingo', also set me on a mission to become fluent in Italian. I can now competently order a train ticket but philosophical conversations are a way down the track. • In 2008 when Next Magazine published 'A Slow Walk Through Italy' about my knee-crunching hike on the Cinque Terre, I began to think about travel writing seriously. Since then I have had articles published in the New Zealand Herald online, AA Directions Magazine and blog posts on Travel Tips Plus and Velvet Escape. • I have also completed two travel writing courses, one from The University of Auckland's Continuing Education in 2007 and the other from the New Zealand Writer's College, through which I have recently completed a Writing for the Web course. |

| About Bella Italia • Bella Italia was initially created in 2000 after I returned home to New Zealand to record my experiences of being in Italy, connect to Italian culture in my home country and plan for future trips. • In 2009, I wrote some posts about Italy for a blog called Travel Tips Plus and this opened my eyes to the potential of Bella Italia. I decided I wanted it to be a place where I could share my experiences of Italy and provide information for fellow Italy lovers. • Since then Bella Italia has morphed quite dramatically in look and content, it used to have an eye-straining terracotta background and pasta recipes. Some things have been kept though, such as the link to the Festival Calendar. (Being in Italy when a festival takes place is a special treat, everyone in the town gets involved and it gives a real sense of tradition and history). • I hope Bella Italia continues to grow and provide you with inspiration for trips to this most alluring of travel destinations. I plan on making many more visits in the future and I hope you do too. Buon viaggio! Angela
